    Props to Bart Campolo

    By Jeremy | October 10, 2006

Hanging out at CCDA with Eric Iverson of Youthworks, a social justice champion and new friend for the past year, he shared how he grew up in the same youth group as Chris Brooks (excellent youth ministry strategist and family life pastor at River City Community Church) and Efrem Smith (one of the great preachers -- young or older -- in America today) of the Sanctuary Covenant Church. (Download Efrem's masterful Batman v. Superman theology sermon from UYWI 2005 here.) One youth group produced Eric, Chris, and Efrem at the same time? That's like a high school basketball team graduating three future NBA lottery picks from the same roster. Who was their youth pastor? His leadership development model the rest of us need to study. Eric surprised me when he said Philly's own Bart Campolo, Tony's son, spent a few years after college pastoring their youth group in Minneapolis. Bart's blogging again, so read up, learn, and enjoy.

      Thanks Bro,
Being compared to a NBA pick is one of the best complemnts I have recived in a long time. I must have misrepresented Chris, as he did not grow up in that minstry, but did serve as the youth pator at the same church; as did Ef and myself. I would say that we all have become leaders who are indigious. It points to the great importance of the local church. Developing local leaders from the hood is essential. We were all “community kids” from the neighboorhood, which I have found tend to be the pearls in any youth group in the urban context. Thanks for the props.

I must admit that there is quite an impact in Youth Ministry that traces back to the Twin Cities. At the National level, when people think of Minneapolis they probably think immediately of Urban Ventures (Art Erickson – one of the great ones), Bethlehem Baptist (John Piper), Living Word Christian Center (Mac Hammond), or Wooddale Church (Leith Anderson). On the St. Paul Side of the river we have Woodland Hills Church (Greg Boyd), and North Heights Lutheran.

Isn’t it great that quietly but methodically God has been rasing up indigenous Leaders in the midst of an extremely white and mega-Church area to have National impact! Sanctuary is THE Church to be involved with right now in Minneapolis. Youth Ministry is making significant progress because of God’s ongoing, sustained involvement in the Twin Cities…

I am humbled to be on the list bro. If this NBA analogy is going to carry, I want to be Charles Barkley and Efrem needs a strength coach!

      Holla.
