Senate to investigate six televangelists

Federal law grants churches tax-exempt status and excludes them from reporting requirements, but prohibits their leaders and founders from dipping into the organizations' accounts for their own personal use. Expenses of any tax-exempt organization are supposed to further the cause or goals of that entity. ... Grassley's staff and other ministry watchdogs said that media-oriented ministries, once known simply as televangelists, are now a billion-dollar industry with little to no oversight from an overburdened IRS. Creflo and Taffi Dollar of College Park, Ga., whose "Changing Your World" broadcasts are seen in 150 countries, owns two Rolls-Royces, private jets, a mansion in Atlanta and a $2.5 million apartment in Manhattan.Article. Here's one young, urban Evangelical's take on televangelism: Personally, I have great respect for the pioneers of evangelism over the airwaves. My wife's faith, for one, is directly traceable to the televangelism of the early 1970s. But like Odd Thomas and Senator Grassley I'm saddened by the excesses of many of the "industry" profiteers today.
