    Devotions with Bono …

    By Jeremy | September 14, 2007

... this morning, in bumper- to-bumper traffic on the BQE. First, the context. I have a mix CD of U2 music in my car that my son loves. Wednesday, he asked me to play Track 9, his "favorite song" ("Pride in the Name of Love") for his friend Chris which is how the CD ended up in the CD player this morning. Someone recently stole my car antenna so instead of Mike and Mike sports talk today, I hit the play button on the CD player. A familiar tune came on: "All Because of You." When Bono sang the chorus, it hit me: "All because of you I am." For Bono devotees and U2 disciples (entire books and blogs have been written about the spiritual significance of U2's music) this may seem obvious. But today, Bono's brilliance nearly blinded me behind the wheel. Suddenly, I fixated on the lyrics and every line meant so much more. In those six words I heard an explicit God reference that I had somehow missed previously. For years, narcissitic me heard Bono say "I" and thought he's singing about himself. Today I heard "I am" and realized the deeper meaning. "You" in the chorus is "I am," the first personal name God called himself. When I got that, I better understood the "child of grace" crying out to be made whole once again.
I was born a child of grace Nothing else about the place Everything was ugly but your beautiful face And it left me no illusion I saw you in the curve of the moon In the shadow cast across my room You heard me in my tune When I just heard confusion All because of you All because of you All because of you I am...I am I like the sound of my own voice I didn't give anyone else a choice An intellectual tortoise Racing with your bullet train Some people get squashed crossing the tracks Some people got high rises on their backs I'm not broke but you can see the cracks You can make me perfect again All because of you All because of you All because of you I am...I am I'm alive I'm being born I just arrived, I'm at the door Of the place I started out from And I want back inside All because of you All because of you All because of you I am
