    Pasadena Prayer Alert

    By Jeremy | May 8, 2007

    Update, 05/10/07

Yesterday afternoon, I met with two of the boys that were there at the Monday night shooting and their mentor, Eric. They were very distraught, angry and hurt and revenge was looking like a possible option to them. Later in the evening, at the prayer meeting that was called together at Community Arms, we called upon God to bring peace to our streets and an end to the retaliation. Afterwards, Mayra and I asked a local Latino Pastor from a church around the corner if he would mind meeting with the two boys. I was still really concerned about them wanting revenge and felt that this pastor might be someone who could speak to their hearts. He had performed a funeral for a young man the night before in a gang-related shooting and had the chance to minister to his friends. He seemed to be right were our two boys were at. Mayra, myself and Eric met together at the Community House with the two boys and it was a very fruitful conversation. The boys were surprisingly open with the pastor and they really heard what he had to say. He spoke a lot of wisdom and love onto them. He asked them to make good decisions because their future depended on it and I believe the boys saw hope in what he said. We prayed for the boys and after the pastor left, we talked with them a little more about their experience the other night. The anger they had earlier had turned into thoughts that it could have been them that had been shot. As they talked about escaping the bullets the other night, they were in such close proximity to the shooters and marveled at how they escaped being shot. Mayra pointed out that God had definitely protected them and that hit them pretty hard. By the time we were done talking, the boys both said they had no intention of seeking revenge and realized that there is more for them out there to accomplish. Praise God! The other boy who was there the night of the shooting was not with us last night. He is not someone we know very well and the two boys we met with said he may still want to seek revenge. Please pray that that spirit of revenge would be squashed within this young man and that God would bring wisdom and peace his heart.
___________________ I received this prayer request from Curt Gibson at Lake Avenue Church today:
Mayra and I feel the need to make you aware of a situation happening in our immediate community. Sadly, there have been 4 shootings since Sunday night stemming from racial tensions. Just after midnight last night, 4 or 5 of our students were hanging out in front of one of the boy’s houses at Mar Vista and Villa. They heard a gun shot and everyone ran. In the process of running, one boy, Anthony, was shot in the back of the head. The other boys who ran knew that someone had been shot but didn’t know who exactly. They later figured out that it was Anthony (who was with us at the Wilson’s 9 days ago for Camp Love) and called his mother. When she arrived at Huntington Hospital, Anthony was in surgery. Fortunately Mayra was there to interpret. The surgeons removed the bullet successfully and he is now recovering in ICU. We do not know if the injury has caused any long-term damage just yet. There is a lot of swelling in his brain, so he is being heavily sedated. Two of our boys went to the police station last night to see if they could identify the shooters from a line-up. At this point, we do not know if anyone has been arrested. Please pray for us (LACF, our partners and volunteers) as we engage in the lives of people in our community. Here is how you can pray, specifically: 1. Pray for Eric Glenn, the mentor of the 5 boys. 2. Pray for Mayra who is spending a lot of time with Anthony’s family. 3. Pray for the tutors and leaders of STARS as they deal with the trauma. 4. Pray for our community. Tension is really high … you can especially feel it as you walk through Community Arms. 5. Pray for our police, that they will have the wisdom to disarm the situation.
