    There’s Something about Aunt Mary

    By Jeremy | January 17, 2007

I've been thinking about Aunt Mary today. Two things I want to share. First is Aunt Mary's courage in the face of adversity. She was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer around 10 years ago. The doctors said it was too late to reverse the cancer's course. Even with agressive treatments including surgery, chemo, and radiation, the prognosis was bad, and they prepared her for the worst. Rather than retreat from the news, Aunt Mary applied herself totally to getting healthy and living life to the fullest. She confronted her situation head on by both embracing the medical treatments, and also seeking nutritional and alternative remedies. Her determination paid off, as the months the doctors forcasted turned into years and ultimately a decade. She survived to see her sons graduate college and begin professional careers, and celebrated John's wedding this past September. And, oh by the way, her and Uncle Johnny traveled the world together. Second is Uncle Johnny's unyielding devotion to his wife throughout the ordeal. For almost as long as I've known him, her healing and comfort became his all-consuming focus. After her diagnosis, he retired from his job to assist her recovery full-time. Because of geographical distance, I've observed his compassion largely from afar, but with admiration and inspiration for a job well done. Thank you, Uncle Johnny, for modeling selfless love for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Please continue to keep the family in your prayers. The arrangements have been set for Thursday - Saturday. Related My friends at Living Hope Community Church in San Fernando, CA, also lost a beloved member of their congregation prematurely this weekend: Lilly Rodriguez, a Martial Arts Hall of Fame kickboxer, wife of 36 years, and mother of six children. The Los Angeles Daily News reports on her passing here. Please keep the Rodriguez and Living Hope families in your prayers as well.
