Happy Birthday, Mom
By Jeremy | May 25, 2007
During mom and dad's courtship.
[By the time this posts, I should already be upstate.]
This past Sunday my mother celebrated a milestone birthday. She's always preferred a behind the scenes, low-key approach to life, so she's never allowed us to really celebrate her birthdays. But this year, we couldn't resist.
The church sang to her and presented her with gifts on Sunday, but the family mostly down-played the occasion to set up the grand surprise this weekend.
The past few years, she's made it her custom to go upstate for Memorial Day Weekend. So my brothers and I arranged with the aunts and uncles and cousins to crash her holiday getaway and surprise her with a fiesta-filled weekend.
My brother Jamie also composed a poem for her that I wanted to share here.
Dear Pastor Arlene, We watch you in action with deep admiration As you give of yourself without hesitation While you're unaware, we take note and observe Your selfless acts as you constantly serve With your loving words you advise and nurture Gently pushing us toward a successful future A future with Christ, that's where you guide Leading by example with nothing to hide Your love's proven steady through the years You listen, you counsel, you wipe away our tears You're a vessel that's used to bring comfort and peace Through struggles and hardships your faith does not cease You epitomize the woman of Proverbs thirty-one An exemplary mother to your proud daughters and sons And a wife of noble character which is hard to find Clothed with Dignity, worth more than rubies so fine Your children arise and declare that you're blessed Possessing integrity that has withstood life's many tests We appreciate the profound impact you've made You've done well, faithful servant; your legacy will remain - Jamie Simon Del RioHere's a nine minute video excerpt of "His Abounding Grace" which tells part of mom's story. Happy birthday, Mom. Love you!
